Ask around any Utah neighborhood and you'll hear the stories: a contractor who took a deposit and disappeared, work that failed inspection, or a 'handyman' who turned out to be nobody at all. The good news is that Utah makes it easy to protect yourself, and it takes about five minutes.

Every legitimate contractor in Utah is licensed through the Division of Professional Licensing, known as DOPL. Go to the DOPL license lookup at dopl.utah.gov, type in the company or owner's name, and you'll see whether the license is active, what type it is, and whether there have been any disciplinary actions. If a contractor won't give you the name their license is under, that is your answer.

Next, ask for proof of insurance, both general liability and workers' compensation. A real company emails you a certificate without hesitation. If someone gets hurt on your property or a water line gets broken, this is what protects you.

Finally, look at reviews, but read them the right way. A perfect score with a handful of reviews means less than a strong score across dozens of them, and the way a company responds to a bad review tells you more than the review itself. Ask for a written estimate with clear scope before any work begins, and never pay the full amount up front.

At WHOC Services we welcome these questions. We'd rather earn your trust with paperwork and references than ask for it with promises. If you're comparing bids for a project in Salt Lake or Utah County, call us at (801) 404-1046 for a free, written estimate you can put side by side with anyone else's.
