# LVP vs. Laminate: Which Flooring Is Right for Your Utah Home?

It's the most common flooring question we get from Utah homeowners: luxury vinyl plank or laminate? They look nearly identical in the showroom, both click together, and both cost far less than hardwood. But they behave very differently once they're in your home, and choosing wrong usually means choosing twice.

The biggest difference is water. LVP is fully waterproof, the planks themselves cannot swell or warp, which makes it the clear winner for basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and anywhere a spill or a minor leak is a matter of when, not if. Laminate has a wood-fiber core that swells when water gets into the seams, so it belongs in dry spaces like bedrooms, offices, and upstairs living areas.

Durability is close, but not equal. Quality LVP handles pets, kids, and rolling chairs with very little wear, and individual planks can be replaced if one gets gouged. Laminate is actually a bit more scratch-resistant on the surface, but once it's damaged or swollen, repair options are limited.

Feel and sound matter too. Laminate tends to feel slightly firmer and warmer underfoot, while LVP is quieter and softer, especially with an attached pad. In a basement over concrete, LVP with a good underlayment is almost always the right call.

Our honest recommendation for most Utah homes: LVP for basements, kitchens, baths, and main living areas with heavy traffic; laminate is a fine budget choice for dry bedrooms. Either way, the subfloor prep is what makes the floor last. WHOC Services installs both across Salt Lake and Utah County, and we'll bring samples to your free estimate so you can see them in your own light. Call (801) 404-1046 to schedule.
